UNDERWATER PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST

Yep, you heard me right...Maui Dreams had their 4th Annual Underwater Pumpkin Carving Contest today out at Keawakapu Beach. A good number of divers came out to show their skills and none as little prepared as myself. We had one hour to do our artistry under the murky depths and when we emerged, there were 18 nicely carved and well presented gourds for the veiwing pleaseure of the beachgoers as well as the participants. We all had ballots to vote on our favorites in several different categories, including scariest, best "Elvis"(?!?), best dive related, etc.
When the silt had cleared, it was none other than The Big Dog, aka, the Hedgehog, aka Volvo Bob, aka ME that walked away with the best overall, and quite to my suprise too as my design was kinda spur of the moment. The Jolly Roger proved a formidale opponent to the likes of wicked jesters, jack-O'-lantern eating Jack-O'lanterns, witchy sillouettes, etc. With a fractured mandible and his crossbones for a hat, Jolly Rog took em by storm, or maybe it was a sympathy vote, I'm still not sure.
Regardless, a lot of fun was had by all that entered and all the curious beachgoers that watched in giggling amazement.
Again, a HUGE kudos and even huger MAHALO goes out to Maui Dreams Dive Co. for putting on the event and making sure everyone had fun and was SAFE and putting together AWESOME prize packages, (I'm still in shock!!). Rachel, Don, Teri, Tom, and Barrett are all an awesome bunch of people and if you haven't had the pleasure to meet them yet, you should make a point to, they make any and all feel very welcome and treat everyone with the true spirit of Aloha.

Here we are going into Sunday but has been a real busy weekend so far. Friday afternoon I was introduced to JAWS, an unbelievable wave set on the NW shore of Maui. JAWS only gets going in certain weather conditions and it was set off by a typhoon Bevi, in the Western Pacific. This has been a real treat for all the big surfers as Ho'okipa and Sweet Beach have had some great swell surf for surfing and boogie boarding. But back to JAWS, this is a wave set that only the best in the World are willing to ride, on Friday and Saturday I was able to witness 15-25 foot waves with more force than I could ever imagine, there were about six or so surfers paying homage to the force out thereand it looked like they were having a blast!! The surfers have to be towed-in on jet skis to catch up to the wave and again, these guys are the best in the World. I never imagined I'd be able to actually catch JAWS as it was going off. Hats off to the chick at HT Surf Shop for the tip on the waves and for the directions.
To top it off we had our Maui Memorial/ Maui Dreams Night Dive out at Molokini with Maui Dive Co. on the Ala Kai II. Thanks to Brendan for showing us a great time. We did two dives, one at twilight and one after dark out at the Molokini Crater and spent about an hour each dive at about 60 feet. Awesome dive with about 20 or so white tip and grey reef sharks swimming all around us. A truly peaceful, easy feeling capped off by an almost full moon glimmering down into the depths. Thanks to everyone that joined us and filled the boat. I think a great time was had by all.
Aloha for now, we'll keep in touch.

Nice dive out at Ulua Beach today. 1 hour at 46ft max depth. Viz was about 35-50ft, better as we got out to the second reef. Several large honu and a cool flying gunard, kudos to Mike for that find. Getting ready to spend an evening in Lahaina, good food and drink. I'll keep ya posted. Aloha
